Chapter 17: The Letter
The probate clerk wore a cardigan the color of oatmeal and carried a ring of keys the size of a dinner plate.
"Box 118," she said, in the basement vault of Maumee Valley Bank.
"The estate holder and a witness. That's you, and that's me."
"And him," I said.
Nolan stood behind me, hands in his coat, looking at the wall of steel doors.
"The paperwork says one holder," the clerk said.
"The paperwork says a lot of things," I said.
"He carried the key for me."
She considered that, and Nolan, and the length of the line of bank officers who were pretending not to listen.
"There's a note in the file," she said.
"Mr. Redfern's lawyer asked to see this box on Tuesday."
"We said no."
"Did he say why?"
"He said it held evidence of fraud," the clerk said.
"I told him fraud is why we have locks."
She turned two keys at once, and the door opened with a sound.
Inside lay a long gray box.
Inside the box lay a single cream envelope, thick, sealed with a strip of tape.
On the front, in square handwriting, my father had written TO NOLAN KEANE.
Beneath that was a second line.
AND SERENA, IF SHE LETS YOU.
