Chapter 15: No Room

I didn't step back to let her in.

I stood in my own doorway in Daniel's shirt and looked at the suitcase.

"Let her do what?" I said.

"Take him." Kendall's hand went flat on her belly. "Mom moved Holt back into the house on Blackstone on Thursday, the day Daddy left. Holt has his old room back. I don't."

"So you came here."

"You've got a guest room. I've seen it."

Across the street, my neighbor had come out for her Sunday paper in a bathrobe.

She stopped on her step with the paper in her hand.

The man two doors down was walking his beagle.

He slowed down too.

They'd both seen the video.

Everybody had.

"No," I said.

Kendall blinked.

"I'm five months pregnant, Margo. I've got nowhere."

"You had my church," I said. "You had the second pew at my rehearsal and you doubled over in it on purpose. You had your window rolled down in my driveway, laughing at me. You don't get my guest room."

"I said I was sorry."

"You never said it once."

She opened her mouth.

She closed it again.

The beagle man had stopped walking entirely.

Behind me the stairs creaked, and Daniel came down in his trousers from last night and nothing else.

He took one look at the suitcase and went into the kitchen without a word.

I heard the kettle go on.

"Sit on the step," I said to Kendall. "I'm calling your father."

"Don't. He'll..."

"He's the only person in your family who hasn't lied to you. Sit down."

She sat on my top step, on the exact spot where I'd kissed Daniel on my birthday, with her pillow in her lap.

I called him.

He picked up on the first ring.

"Margo."

"Kendall's on my front step with a suitcase. Holt's back in your house and she isn't."

There was a long silence.

"Twenty minutes," he said.

Daniel came out with a mug of tea and handed it down to Kendall.

She looked at it like she didn't know what it was for.
