Chapter 9: Objection

Daddy came to Grandpa's house the next morning with Faye walking half a step behind him.

I watched from the top of the stairs, hugging my knees through the banister.

Daddy had not shaved.

His tie was crooked, and his eyes were red.

Faye wore a soft gray sweater and no makeup, and she had a tissue balled up in her fist.

She looked like someone who had been crying for a day and a night.

"Dad," Daddy said. "Where is she?"

"Upstairs," said Grandpa. "Safe. Come into my study. Faye, stay in the hall."

"She comes with me," said Daddy.

Grandpa looked at him for a long second.

Then he stepped aside, and all three of them went into the study and shut the door.

I tiptoed down four stairs and sat where I could hear.

Their voices came through the wood, a little muffled.

I heard the recording first.

It was my own voice, so small, and then that hard whisper that sounded nothing like the one she used at dinner.

Then it stopped.

For a long time, nobody said a thing.

I held my breath.

"Patrick," Grandpa said quietly. "You heard it."

"I heard it."

"Then you know."

"I know my wife was scared," Daddy said.

I almost fell off the stair.

"She was scared and angry, and a six-year-old was wearing a recording device that Desmond hid in a toy," he said. "Dad. Do you hear what you're saying? They hooked up my child like she was an undercover cop."

"I am saying that woman frightened your daughter."
