Chapter 20: The Vote
The vote took four minutes.
It would have taken two, but one board member needed his glasses, and another had to be told what a motion was.
Harold stood at the head of the table with a pen.
"I move that the chairman's shares in Rainsford Hotels pass to my son, Carlton Rainsford, effective tonight," he said. "I move that Vera Rainsford be removed from the board and the executive committee, effective now. And I move that the matter of Pearl Street Advisory go to the company's lawyers, and then, if they find what I think they'll find, to the district attorney."
"Second," said the woman in the blue dress.
"All in favor."
Hands went up around the table.
They went up slowly, one at a time, and every one of them looked toward the stage as it did.
Vera stood in the silver gown with her arms folded across her chest.
"Nine," Harold counted.
He lowered his eyes to the last chair.
A thin man in a bow tie sat there with his hand halfway up and his face in agony.
"It's all right," Harold said.
"I voted for her the last time," the thin man whispered.
"I know you did. Do it differently."
The hand went up.
"Ten of ten," said Harold. "The motions carry."
For a moment the ballroom was dead silent.
Then somebody at the back started to clap, and it spread, thin at first, then not thin.
Carlton stood still in the middle of it with his hands at his sides.
He looked like a man who'd been handed something very heavy and couldn't quite work out where to set it down.
