Chapter 13: Not a Clause

Torin let the silence stand until it hurt.

Then he rose from the Crown seat.

"The claim is dismissed," he said.

"The petitioner's daughter called him three times from an empty house. She has told this Council where she wants to live. The Council will honor it."

Declan sat down hard in the petitioner's chair.

"What was said here about Anders Harcourt belongs to the Redfern council," Torin went on. "I will hear their account within the week. This Moot is closed."

Seven Alphas began talking at once.

I took Hazel to the back door, where the housekeeper waited with a coat.

"Is Dad going to be in trouble?" Hazel asked.

"Yes."

"Good," she said, and then, smaller, "I mean, not good."

"I know what you mean."

I kissed her hair and sent her down the path.

When I turned, Torin was still standing by the Crown seat, and he wasn't looking at the Alphas.

He was looking at me.

I remembered his face when Felicity screamed.

A surprised man stares, and Torin had shut his eyes.

I put that away to ask about later.

It was past ten when I climbed the stairs to his study.

The door stood open and the lights were off.

He was at the window with his back to me, and the lake behind the glass was black.

"Terms are broken," I said.

"Which one?" He didn't turn.

"The one about no touching in private. Shut the door."

He turned then.

"Cora, you've spent a day watching your marriage get explained to a room full of strangers."

"I have. Tonight I'd like one thing I picked myself."

"There's a drawer in this desk," he said. "It's about Anders. It will hurt you, and you should have it from me before you do this."

"Tomorrow."

"Cora."

"You told me it was a locked door, and you've never lied to me." I crossed the room. "Keep it locked one more night."
