Chapter 17: Alone Is a Word

Rhydian read the note once, held it over the lamp, and let it burn down to his fingers.

"No," he said.

"I haven't said anything yet."

"You were about to say you're going."

"I am going."

The flap shook as Eirik ducked in, still bleeding from the scalp, and read the room in one look.

"The host crossed Ravenpass at dawn," he reported. "Four thousand riders, a day behind us. I'm going to stand very far away now."

He left. The flap fell shut behind him.

My wounds had already begun to knit, and the bandage on my thigh itched under my shirt.

I did not sit. Neither did Rhydian.

"She says alone," I said. "She says if you follow, he stops being comfortable."

"She says a great many things."

"She has never once been wrong about what I'll do."

"Then do something else."

"She'd count on that too."

He turned on me then, and I saw for the first time how frightened he was. It was under the anger.

"Alone is a word for a woman who has no one," he said. "You have a husband and four thousand riders."

"Who can't cross the gate before she lights a fire under my father."

"Then I walk in beside you."

"And she has both of us in one room, and nobody left to bring the host."

"I don't care about the host!"

His voice cracked across the tent, and I stopped breathing.
