Chapter 22: Judgment
Nobody in the Courtyard of Stones breathed.
"I don't understand," Leoric said.
He was on his knees in the ash, and he was looking up at her.
"I never lit anything of yours. I don't know what you mean."
"No," said Perdita. "You wouldn't."
She stood with Eirik's sword against her ribs and did not try to lift her chin. She had no need.
"A year after she burned, you took a torch from the wall of this courtyard," she said.
"You walked it to my stake yourself. You didn't hand it to anyone. You wanted to be the one."
"Why?"
"Because I told you, finally, whose pup it was."
She turned her head.
On the flags, three Hollowmark riders held the grey-bearded Ashen on his belly, a boot between his shoulders.
He stared up at her with blood on his teeth.
"His," said Perdita. "Not yours. Never yours."
A sound ran around the walls, the soft ugly sound a city makes when it learns something it will not forget.
"The Ashen fever took the pup in the fourth winter," she said.
