Chapter 24: The Luna Queen
"Yes," I said. "One."
His face went still, and I watched him brace for the end of it.
"One clause," I said. "Not the old one."
I crossed the black stones and took the folded contract out of the breast of his coat.
He had carried it there for a month. The paper was soft at the creases.
"Come to the tent," I said. "I want it written where it started."
The camp by the river was quiet.
Eirik had posted guards a long way off and then, with what he thought was subtlety, taken himself to the farthest fire.
Rhydian's tent was the same plain canvas, with a lamp, a table, and a cot with a wool blanket.
I laid the contract on the table and smoothed it flat.
Equal vote on war and peace. Equal seal. My seat, my guard.
And his clause, in his hard slashing hand: either of us may leave, but says so to the other's face.
I held the corner over the lamp.
The flame took it, and it curled, and the black crept across his signature and mine.
"Seraphine," he said, rough.
"Hold the pen."
I dropped the last of it in the dish. On a fresh sheet I wrote one line, and pushed it across.
He read it.
Neither of us leaves.
His eyes lifted, bright, and a laugh broke out of him that was mostly breath.
"That's not a clause. That's a vow."
"Then sign it."
