Chapter 9: Sunday Table
I took my mother's cold hands and pulled her inside.
"Then we play it tonight," I said. "At Dad's table. With everybody."
"Lorenzo will be there."
"I want him there."
She looked past me at Rafael, who had put his gun away and was pouring her a coffee.
"And him?"
"He's coming too."
She took the coffee from him with both hands.
"Thank you," she said stiffly.
"De nada, señora."
She almost smiled. Then she remembered who she was and didn't.
"I'll bring one more guest," I said.
"Who?"
"Someone who was there that night."
Sunday dinner at the Lombardi house was at six o'clock.
It had been at six o'clock my whole life.
My father at the head of the table. Gravy on the stove since nine in the morning.
My mother made it that day too. I could smell it from the driveway.
The dining room was full.
Lorenzo was at the head, in my father's chair.
He'd had it for nine days, and he sat in it.
Carina and Stefano were on his right. Two Marchetti uncles, fat and gray and suspicious, sat further down.
