Chapter 10: The Warehouse
The fish warehouse in Nampo-dong smelled of ice, brine and old blood.
Si-on walked into it at two in the morning with his hands open and empty at his sides.
The voice on the phone had told him to.
Alone.
Behind him the steel door rolled shut.
He had told Seo-jin the plan in the car, and the Devil had told him it was suicide.
Si-on had said that Ji-won had been in a drain for three days and he was going in.
"Then I'm coming in behind you," Seo-jin had said.
"They said alone."
"They will see what they see."
It was the nearest thing to an argument Si-on had ever won.
Now the concrete floor stretched ahead of him under long white lights, scattered with crates of crushed ice.
At the far end, on a plastic chair, sat Ji-won.
His hands were tied.
One eye was swollen shut and he had no glasses, and when he saw Si-on, he made a wet, furious sound behind his gag.
Three men stood around him.
One was tall and thin with a shaved head.
One was heavy and had a tattoo of a carp on his neck.
The third held a tire iron against his shoulder and smiled.
"Nam Si-on," said the tall one, pleasantly. "Mr. Hong's regards."
"Let him go."
"Of course. After a small formality." The man gestured. "Take off your shirt and turn around."
Si-on did not move.
"What?"
"Your shirt. Mr. Hong wants to be sure you haven't been hurt." The smile widened. "It's a courtesy."
He understood nothing, except that it was wrong, wrong from the root.
"No."
"Then your friend gets another courtesy."
