Chapter 7: What She Asked For
Silvia walked down the aisle between the empty chairs without hurrying.
She stopped an arm's length from me and shifted the baby higher on her hip.
He was small and red-faced and asleep.
He had Edoardo's black hair.
"Say it to me," I said. "All of it. I want to hear it from you."
"You heard it already," Silvia said. "That's why you came."
"Say it anyway."
She looked around the hall.
The families were gone, but the waiters stood against the wall, and the Mancuso men stood at the doors, and every one of them was listening.
"I love him," she said. "I've loved him since before he gave you that ring."
"You sat in my kitchen the night he proposed."
"I held your hand and said I was happy for you."
"Were you?"
"No."
She said it quietly, with no apology in it, and that was worse than if she had cried.
"I lived in your house nine years, Vivi. Everyone was kind to me. Your mother braided my hair. Your brothers took me to dinner."
"They loved you."
"They pitied me. There's a difference. Your father told me every Christmas that your family owed me a life."
"They did."
"And I never asked for it. Not once, until I had to."
I stared at her.
"Your mother signed something," Silvia said. "The year my mother died. A promise that if I ever needed anything the Lanzetta house could give, I would only have to ask."
"Mama wouldn't."
"She cried when she signed it. Your father made her. He wanted me to stay quiet about the crash."
