Chapter 22: Decoys Get Used Up
Maeve's POV
Two people in windbreakers got out of the first sedan before it had stopped rolling.
The woman held up a leather case with a badge in it.
The Inspector General's seal was stamped on the front of her jacket.
"Release Mr. Kerr," she said. "Now."
The agents holding Eamon looked at the man in gray.
"On whose authority?" he said.
"A federal judge's. Signed at four this morning."
She held up a single page, and I could see two signatures on it.
"It orders us to take the Chicago Field Office file on a cover asset."
She looked at him.
"It also orders us to detain the supervising officer for questioning. That's you."
He read the page.
I watched him read it a second time, slowly, with his lips pressed together.
"This was sworn out by someone with a grudge," he said.
"It was sworn out by two people," said the director.
He had climbed out of the back of the first car, and he was standing very straight in his gray coat.
"My signature is on the memo that put Miss Doran into your program as a cover," he said. "I've given the Inspector General a statement describing exactly how you asked for it."
"You signed it," said the man in gray.
"I did, and I will answer for that. I'll answer for it in the same room as you."
The agents holding Eamon let go.
He stood up slowly, rubbing the wrist the cuff had been on, and stepped to my side.
His bandage had bled through, and neither of us mentioned it.
I took his hand.
The woman in the windbreaker went to the man in gray and said a long list of things that began with the word conspiracy.
He turned his head toward me while she said them, and his face had finally lost its calm.
