I watched my own wedding photo on Gianni's little television in silence.

Then I got out of his bed and started looking for my jeans.

"Where are you going?"

"The hotel."

"There'll be cameras."

"I know," I said. "He put them there for me."

Gianni sat up.

The scar through his eyebrow was very white.

"Then I'm coming."

"You're coming to the lobby," I said. "Not outside. If you stand next to me on that sidewalk, they've got a picture of Dr. L with a Corsaro soldier. That's the story he wants."

He didn't like it.

He came anyway, and stayed where I put him.

By eight there were four news vans on Broad Street.

The doorman had stopped pretending they weren't there.

Bess met me in the lobby with Archie, who was in his dinosaur pajamas and a winter hat for no reason.

"You're not going out there in that," Bess said, looking at my jeans.

"Yes, I am."

"Good. I hate the suit."

Archie pulled at my sleeve.

"Are you going to be on TV?"

"Probably."

"Can you say hi to me?"

"I'll think about it."

I walked out through the brass doors.

The cameras swung around.

And there, at the curb, under a channel six umbrella with a microphone clipped to his tie, was Carmine.

He was doing a live interview.

He saw me and he smiled.

"Here she is," he said to the reporter. "Ask her yourself."

He hadn't come to hide behind a source.

He'd come to watch.

Twenty microphones came at my face.

"Dr. Laidlaw, were you married into the Corsaro crime family?"

"Yes," I said.

The reporters went quiet.

They hadn't expected that.

"I was married to him," I said, and pointed at Carmine. "For five years. I walked out with no coat and no money six years ago, and I built the reader in Boston with my own hands and eleven thousand dollars from a car I sold."
