Chapter 9: Gender Reveal

I wore something nice.

Black silk, bare shoulders, my hair down.

Bess zipped me up and said, "You look like a widow who did it."

"That's the idea."

Corsaro's main dining room had been turned into a nursery.

Pink and blue balloons on every chair. A cake shaped like a baby carriage. A giant black balloon over the bar with a question mark on it, waiting to be popped.

Fifty guests. The aunts, the cousins, the capos and their wives, half of Passyunk Avenue.

Every one of them turned to look at me when I walked in.

Gianni was standing by the bar in a dark suit.

He didn't come over.

He just watched me cross the room, and I felt it on my bare shoulders.

Lucia came at me with her arms out.

Cream lace, a sash that said MOMMY TO BE, a glass of champagne in one hand.

"You came," she said, and kissed the air beside my cheek. "I'm so glad. I wanted you to see."

"I wouldn't miss it."

She swept her champagne glass at the easel in the middle of the room.

On it was a poster, three feet tall, of the sonogram from my envelope.

"Our little prince," she said. "Or princess. We find out at eight."

"Should you be drinking that?"

She glanced at the glass like she'd forgotten it.

"One sip is fine. My doctor says."

"Your doctor's very relaxed."

Carmine came up behind her and put his hand on the back of her neck.

"June," he said. "You look good. Lonely, but good."

"Congratulations, Carmine. Eleven weeks."

"Eleven weeks," he said. "Healthy as a horse."

I walked over to the easel.

I'd spent six years looking at pictures like this one.

Every morning, at the tank. A thousand scans of Archie, from a dot to a boy.
