Chapter 20: The Branch

On Monday at nine the Cranston branch was full.

It was a Monday, and half the neighborhood had come to cash checks and deposit rent.

A dozen people stood in line, and a woman with a toddler held the door for me.

The teller with the tight bun saw me and put her hand over her mouth.

I wore the gray suit and my mother's bracelet.

I carried the same manila folder, and I took the same place under the big clock.

Craig was not in his glass office.

The door still said BRANCH MANAGER, and behind it a man in a silver tie sat at Craig's desk, with two people in lanyards standing at his shoulders.

He came out when he saw me.

"Ms. Benedetti," the regional vice president said, and shook my hand.

"Thank you for coming. We would like to do this where the customers can hear."

I looked at him.

"You want it public."

"Mr. Delaney made it public first," he said, dry as paper. "In this lobby, two Mondays ago, to a woman holding a folder."

The old man from the line two weeks ago stood at the second window, in the same hat.

He met my eyes and gave me a small, grave nod.
