Chapter 21: The Door

At noon the back room of Colucci Provisions held every man who counted on Federal Hill.

The old uncle was there, and the capos in dark jackets, and Pio at the foot with a cough drop in his cheek.

Raf's mother sat in a corner chair with her purse in her lap.

I took the seat on Raf's right.

He did not sit.

He had a sheet of paper in his hand, and he laid it in the middle of the table.

"Warwick," he said.

Nobody answered.

"The Tuesday trucks. Forty tons to a cemetery, three nights a month. My father started it, and my uncle kept it, and I have taken a third of my income from it for six years."

The old uncle's face did not move.

"It ends today."

"Raffaele," a capo said.

"The yard hauls gravel. It hauls produce. It does not haul anything that isn't on a bill of lading."

"That's a third of the income of this room."

"Yes."

"It's also the family's cushion, if Tessari comes back."

"Tessari isn't coming back. And if he does, I'll answer him with something I can say out loud."

He turned his head.

He put his scarred hand on my chair back.

"I have one more thing. She doesn't work for me."

The room stirred.

I had known, because he had told me in the car, and I had told him he was a fool.

"As of today, she isn't on my payroll," Raf said. "She has no salary and no desk of mine. She is a licensed accountant with a client, and I am the client."
