Chapter 19: The Night Before

By Friday night Emanuele was back in his own bed on Larkhill, with a nurse he had not asked for and a bandage the size of a dinner plate.

I sat on the edge of the mattress and watched him sleep, and the nurse watched me, and at ten she went away.

Bruna had come in once, an hour before, with a tray and her news.

"Mariano's clinic ambulance reached the hospital at eleven last night," she said. "They found room 412 empty."

"Where is my father?"

"In my flour cellar on Quay Street, with his two old men, eating bread and complaining."

"And Mariano?"

"He told the capos the Cortese took Vittorio too. He's crying on the hour. It's quite a performance."

She'd put the tray down and kissed the top of my head, which she had never done.

Now the room was dim and the house was quiet, and I watched the bandage rise and fall.

Emanuele opened his eyes.

"You're staring," he said, hoarse.

"I'm checking you haven't died on my stitches."

"I've been very careful."

"Don't be funny. You're not allowed to be funny for a week."

He smiled, and it hurt him, and he smiled anyway.

I picked up the black felt pen from the nightstand.
