Chapter 10: Hold Still

On the sixth night I went to his room.

The Table would hear me at noon the next day, and neither of us had slept.

Maeve had stitched his arm on the kitchen table four days earlier, swearing the whole time, and he had not taken the sling off since.

I knocked once and opened the door before he answered.

He was sitting on the edge of the bed in a gray shirt with the sleeve cut away.

A lamp burned low beside him.

He stood up when he saw me, and he did not come closer.

"You should be asleep."

"You said you wouldn't touch me unless I put my hand on yours," I said.

"I did."

"I'm putting it there."

I crossed the room, took his good hand and laid it flat against my ribs over my shirt.

His palm was hot through the cotton.

I felt him breathe in.

"You're sure," he said.

"I've been sure since the stairs."

"Helena."

"Don't talk," I said. "I've been talked to for three years."

His mouth came down on mine, hard and slow, and the world went simple.

He kissed the way he fought, with no waste in it.

One hand slid into my hair and tipped my face up.

I pulled his shirt over his head and got it over the sling without hurting him.

His chest was broad, and there were old scars on it I wanted to put my mouth on.

I did, and he made a low, rough sound in his throat.

"Careful," he said. "I'm not made of anything fine."

"I'm not asking for fine."

I pushed him backward, and the backs of his knees hit the bed.

He sat, and I stood over him, and for the first time in three years I looked at a man's face while he looked at me.

He took in everything with those gray eyes.
