The pistol was heavier than my father's revolver.

I looked at Renata first.
She had backed against the sideboard with her chin up, and she was daring me.
I knew exactly what it would feel like to lift my arm.
I had come to Washington to feel it.
I had once stood in a garage with my whole life narrowed down to a trigger.
I looked at the pistol, and I looked at Lila's tablet on the white cloth.
My sister had spent her last week drawing boxes around the things that scared her.
She had not asked anyone to shoot a single one of them.
