Chapter 18: The Luncheon
Silvio's men brought Marianne out to the drive at eight the next morning, in the same black cardigan.
She had not slept.
Neither had I.
Luciano had driven me to a hotel on K Street.
He waited in the lobby while I lay on a made bed with my boots on.
He asked for nothing, and I gave him nothing.
I sat Marianne in the back of a rental car and took the wheel myself.
"Where are we going?" she said.
"To your luncheon."
"Mara, no."
"The church bulletin says the Lila Tennison Scholarship sits again at noon," I said.
"Fifty women and a sheet cake.
"You'll want to say a few words about Lila."
She tried the door handle.
I had locked it.
I watched her understand that, and I did not enjoy it, and I did not stop.
St. Columba's parish hall smelled of coffee and floor wax.
Fifty women in good wool sat at round tables under a banner that had been rehung that morning.
IN LOVING MEMORY OF LILA TENNISON.
