Chapter 24: Lila's Name
The first Lila Tennison Scholarship Dinner was held on the second Saturday of December, in the ballroom of a hotel on Connecticut Avenue.
I had written the guest list myself, in Lila's notebook, in blue pen.
There were sixty bookkeepers, accountants and ledger clerks, all under twenty-five.
Every one of them had applied by writing three pages on why numbers matter.
I had read all of them.
I stood at the back of the room in a plain black dress.
My sister's locket lay against my collarbone and her bracelet was on my wrist.
The chip was gone from the clasp.
I had taken it out myself, on the kitchen table, and thrown it into the river.
The money came from a place I was proud of.
Lila's trust had passed to me when the court removed Marianne.
I had put six hundred thousand dollars into the fund, and I had not given a dime to any lawyer.
Silvio Corvi had sent a check too, with no letter.
It was for one hundred and fifty thousand dollars, drawn on his own account.
The memo line read, For the best bookkeeper I had.
