Chapter 19: Both Mouths
"Take you to Thanksgiving," Jesse repeated, into my hair.
"Yes."
"To my mother's table," Jesse said.
"Yes. I want to walk in the front door and sit down."
"Are you sure?"
"I'm sure," I said. "Don't ask me again."
He didn't. He only held me tighter on the blanket, and the rain kept on over our heads.
By Monday night I could still feel the paddle if I sat down too fast.
It was a pleasant ache, and I carried it around the vet clinic all day.
I drove out to Franklin after work, and they were both waiting on the porch of the little brick house with the light on.
"You eat?" Colt said.
"No."
"Good. Inside."
The bedroom was at the back.
It had a real bed in it, a tall oak thing with a quilted spread that Jesse's mother had sent over the first week, and I knew exactly what it had cost her to hand it over.
Neither of them said a word about that.
I stood at the foot of it with my coat still on.
"I have a rule I want to change," I said.
Colt and Jesse looked at each other.
"I say when," I said. "That's been my rule since the shower. It's kept me safe, and I've liked it. Tonight I want you to say when."
"All of it?" said Jesse.
"Everything. Where I go, what I do, how rough. You decide. And when I want it back, I'll take it."
"How will we know?"
"You'll know," I said.
Colt was quiet for a moment.
He set his cap on the dresser and unbuttoned his cuffs, one and then the other.
"Take your coat off," he said.
It was as simple as that.
I took off my coat and folded it over the chair, and my sweater, and the rest.
I stood in front of them naked in the lamplight with my arms at my sides, and it was the first time in five weeks that I did not know what came next.
