Chapter 21: The Armchair
Colt's POV
My aunt stood on the pool house step with a plate in her hands, and nobody said anything.
Then Lacey took the plate.
"Thank you," she said.
"Mm," said my aunt.
She looked at me over Lacey's shoulder, once, and I saw her take in the quilt and the three of us.
She went back across the yard in her good coat, with her back very straight.
We ate the turkey off the foil, sitting on the floor, with our hands.
Jesse cried a little into the pie.
I said nothing, because I'm not built for it, and Lacey put her hand on the back of my neck and left it there.
On Friday morning my aunt called Jesse at seven.
He put her on speaker.
"Your grandmother's chair is on the porch," she said. "The green one. Take it to the girl's apartment."
"Mama?"
"She needs somewhere to sit that isn't a floor," my aunt said, and hung up.
I loaded it into the bed of my F-150 myself.
It was a wing chair in green velvet gone bald at the arms, and it smelled of rose powder and old cedar.
Jesse's grandmother had sat in it for forty years and told us to wipe our feet.
It took both of us to get it up Lacey's stairs.
She opened the door in a robe, with her hair down, and she looked at the chair and put both hands over her mouth.
"She sent it?"
"She sent it," Jesse said.
"For me?"
"For the girl," Jesse said, and then he saw her face and said, "For you."
We set it in the corner of her living room by the window, with the light on it.
She walked around it twice and ran her hand along the bald arm.
