Chapter 7: The Hip

"What back?" I said. "What card?"

Jesse snatched the phone off the sink and held it against his chest, which left him wearing a towel and nothing else.

I was wearing a towel and nothing else, and Colt stood in the fogged-up stall with water dripping off his chin.

"It's nothing," Jesse said.

"It's my card. Plus Nobody. It's got a back?"

"They all have a back."

"Colt," I said.

"I've got it," Colt said, "and I'll give it to you."

"Now."

"Not now. I want to give it to you right, Lacey. In the daylight, when you've slept."

"That makes no sense," I said.

"It will," Colt said, and held out a hand to help me out of the shower, and I took it, because I was too tired and too clean to argue.

I fell asleep between them.

I woke up alone in my bed at six-thirty to the smell of burning toast.

My robe was gone from the hook on the door.

I found it in the kitchen, on Colt, who stood at my stove with his back to me.

The sleeves hit him at the elbow, and the belt was tied in a bow he had clearly worked out himself.
