Chapter 9: The Back of the Card

I unfolded the card on my own knee.

On the front, in the groom's block capitals, it said PLUS NOBODY.

On the back, in the same black marker and the same fat hand, it said:

COLT ASKED FOR THIS TABLE. JESSE ASKED FOR THIS TABLE. THURSDAY. SEPARATELY. HA.

I read it once.

I read it again, slower, with a finger under each word, because my brain wouldn't take it in.

The ceiling fan turned.

Jesse had pulled the quilt up over his hips, and he was staring at the wall.

Colt sat on the edge of the bed with his elbows on his knees and his wallet still in his hand.

"Separately," I said.

"Yes, ma'am."

"Thursday."

"It was the Thursday before," Colt said. "At his place, with the tux fittings. The groom had pictures up on his phone from your bachelorette."

"My bachelorette?"

"You were in the plastic crown," Jesse said, to the wall. "And the sash."

I closed my eyes.

I remembered the crown.

I remembered a margarita glass the size of my head, a rooftop in Nashville, and a lot of women singing off-key.

"He showed you a photo of me drunk."

"You looked like fun," Colt said.

"I looked drunk."

"You looked like fun drunk. You were laughing at something, with your head back, and I could see the gap in your teeth."
