Chapter 13: Cora's Terms
Cora stood up when she saw us.
She had the letter pressed flat against her chest, and she looked like she hadn't slept since the island.
"I came back," she said. "I know you didn't ask me to."
Ansel stopped at the gate and didn't come any closer.
"I'll wait on the street," he said.
"No," Cora said. "Please. You should hear this too."
"I've heard enough of you."
"Then hear the last part."
He stayed at the gate with his hands in his coat pockets.
Cora held out the letter.
I didn't take it.
"Read it to me," I said.
"It's addressed to the town."
"It's one page. I wrote it on the ferry."
"It says I lied about the scarf, that Beatrice Rooke paid me to leave, and that the check is real."
"I want to read it out loud at the Harvest Supper, on Saturday, in the town hall, in front of everyone."
