Chapter 9: Eggs

Matt's POV

I did not sleep, and I did not want to.

I lay on my back in her bed with her head on my shoulder and her breath on my chest, and I watched the light change on the ceiling from gray to white.

A line of sunlight crept across the quilt and reached her bare shoulder.

I did not move my arm.

She had told me where to put my hands, and she had told me where to take them away, and I had not once put them anywhere she had not named.

I had thought I would find it unbearable.

I found it was the most I had been trusted with in twenty years.

Between us on the mattress lay a space, a hand's breadth of cold sheet.

I had left it there when I lay down.

She had closed it in the gray of the morning with her leg over mine, in her sleep, and I had not slept since.

I thought about eleven weeks of standing in a lot.

I thought about the cup of coffee I had left on her hood, with its two sugars, and the break-room log I had copied it from like a thief.

I had thought of it as care.

Lying in her bed, I thought for the first time that it was surveillance, however kind, and that she had a right to hate it.

She had not hated it.
