Chapter 13: Section Nine

The hospital board met in a long room on the ninth floor, around a table that sat nine.

Virginia took the chair against the wall that Tobias had pulled out for her.

She had the notebook in her bag, and Abel's phone was in Abel's pocket, and Abel was waiting in the hall.

Greta came in at five to nine in navy and pearls and sat at the far end.

Seven people filled the seats between them, and none of them looked at Virginia.

"We have one item," Greta said, when the clock hit nine. "A motion to remove Tobias VanAlstyne as chairman, on grounds of instability."

"Seconded," said the man on her right.

"I'll speak to it," Greta said. "My son has lived a hard three years. He stood on a ballroom stage on Saturday and contradicted his mother in front of four hundred donors."

"Nobody doubts his heart. The board has to doubt his judgment."

She sat very straight, and her voice was warm.

Tobias let her finish.

Then he said, "I'd like to answer, and I'd like a witness."

"The chair recognizes himself," said the woman at the end of the table dryly, and one or two people almost smiled.

Tobias nodded at the door.

Abel came in with his coat still on and put his phone in the middle of the table.

"This is the landing of the VanAlstyne townhouse, last night at ten," Abel said. "I'm a surgeon on staff here. I recorded it myself. Please listen to all of it."

He pressed play.
