Chapter 4: Three Minutes Under the Tap
Greta walked into the sunroom and found the two of them standing too close together.
"Sisi, you're monopolizing our guest," she said, smiling. "Virginia, I hope you've told her how happy you are for the two of them."
Virginia looked at Sisi, and Sisi looked at the floor.
"I'm still working out what I'm happy about," Virginia said.
Greta laughed, patted Virginia's arm, and took Sisi's arm, and led her away.
That night Virginia couldn't sleep in the blue room.
At midnight she went down to the kitchen in her socks, looking for tea.
The light over the stove was on, and Tobias was sitting at the table with a folded newspaper in front of him.
He looked up and didn't smile.
"You've seen it," he said.
"Sisi told me." She put the kettle on. "Tobias, there's a ring size in the article."
"I know. I read it forty times."
"Did you give your mother the size?"
"No."
"Did you tell her to print it?"
"No." He turned the paper around so she could see the headline. VANALSTYNE HEIR TO WED GODDAUGHTER. "I called the editor the morning it ran. He said my mother's office sent the story and the photograph, and he has no reason to doubt the VanAlstyne family."
"So you said nothing publicly."
"I told Mother to retract it. Twice. She said a retraction would humiliate Sisi in front of the whole city, and Sisi begged me to wait until after the gala."
"Did she?"
"Sisi? She never begged me for anything. Mother said she did."
