Chapter 21: Border Storm
The storm front came over the horizon as a wall of black glass.
It stood a hundred miles high and ran from one edge of the sky to the other, and the fleet was sailing straight into it.
Lucan stood on the flagship's bridge with his hand in Garrick's.
Forty ships were strung out ahead and behind, and every one of them had its lamps lit.
"Formation," Garrick said.
"Holding, sir," the captain answered. "For now."
"Corin. Every Drone to a Sentinel station, all decks. Put them with the ships' own Sentinels."
"Aye, sir."
The first edge of the front touched the leading ship.
Her lamps went out, one row after another.
The hull rang loud and long, and the whole fleet heard it over the speakers.
"Lead ship is down to emergency power," the communications officer said. "Her Sentinel is screaming. The Drone has fainted."
"Second ship, the same," said another voice.
"Third."
The deck tilted under Lucan's feet.
Instruments flared on every panel and went dead.
Garrick's hand tightened until it hurt.
"It's feeding on the ships' storms," he said, through his teeth. "Every Sentinel aboard feeds it more. If it takes the whole fleet, they'll tear each other apart."
"Then take them out of it."
"I can't carry forty."
"You can't carry forty alone."
Garrick turned his head.
Lucan took off his coat and dropped it on the deck.
He unbuttoned his shirt to the waist and took Garrick's other hand and pressed both of them flat against his own bare chest.
