Chapter 10: Monday
On Monday afternoon Cass walked through my lobby with Carson's mother on her arm.
They were touring the hotel for the send-off. Cass pointed at the chandelier and laughed at something soft.
I stood at the front desk with a clipboard, ten feet away, and I did not look at them.
Elias was on the scaffold above the walnut wall.
He came down while Cass was still talking, one rung at a time, and stopped beside me with the scraper in his hand.
He kept his voice low and level, and he spoke to the clipboard.
"It's Monday."
"I can see that."
"I know what you're thinking," he said. "You want me to stop being careful with you."
I stopped breathing.
"Tonight," Elias said, "I'm going to take you up the stairs to my place and put you on my bed, and I'm going to make you say my name until you forget there was ever a game."
Across the lobby, Cass's laugh floated over the marble.
Nobody was looking at us. Nothing could happen yet.
"Is that your answer?" I asked, very quietly.
"It's my honest one."
I wrote 9 p.m. on the clipboard and held it where he could read it.
He went back up the scaffold without another word.
At nine, I was in his loft.
He didn't ask whether I wanted a drink. He shut the door behind me and stood looking at me with his hands at his sides.
"Say it," I said. "Out loud."
"I've wanted you for nine years."
Then he kissed me.
It wasn't careful. He kissed me against the door with his hand in my hair, and his mouth was hot and sure.
