Chapter 6: Walkthrough

On Thursday morning I walked the grand ballroom with Cass and a clipboard.

I had run two hundred events in that room. I could have done the walkthrough with my eyes shut.

The chandeliers were on, and the staff had already set one round table in the middle of the floor as a sample.

White linen, gold chargers, a candle in a low glass cup.

Cass turned in a slow circle with her coat open.

"It's so beautiful," she said. "I knew you'd make it beautiful."

"A hundred and forty guests," I said. "Fourteen tables of ten, with a head table on the riser."

"And the screen?"

"Behind the head table, twenty feet wide. Ben can run the slides from the booth."

She nodded and chewed her thumbnail, which she only did when she wanted something.

"Vic, I want to ask you about the game."

"What about it?"

"We want to play it for everybody. Napkins on every table, a pen at every seat. Three rounds, and then a final one." Her voice went soft. "It's tradition. You know that."

"I know it's tradition," I said.

"Would you run it? You're so good in front of a room."

I wrote 140 napkins on the clipboard and drew a box around it.

"I'll run it," I said. "I want to write the middle round myself."

Her pen stopped. "The middle round?"

"One question. I'll write it and print the cards."

I watched her think about it.

It was a very short think. Her face cleared, bright and generous.
