Chapter 36: The Last Word
I read it twice.
Then I gave it to Corvin.
He read it standing by the race in his wedding coat, with a twig of heather still in his hair.
"You don't have to go," he said.
"I know."
"He doesn't get to ask you for anything. Not ever again."
"I know that too." I took the letter back and folded it. "I'm going anyway. Once. And then he's had his once."
Corvin looked at me for a long time.
"Not alone."
"I wasn't going to go alone. I married you yesterday. I'm making you come everywhere now."
We went up the pass three days later.
Agnes kept the twins. She said she'd keep them forever if we were slow about it.
Davy came, because nobody could stop him, on the condition that he stayed with the horses.
The watch post sat at the top of the Wolfpass, where the road crossed the saddle.
A stone hut, a stable, a wall, and a tower you could see the free packs' country from.
Eight soldiers kept it.
It was the end of August. Up there, it was already cold.
The sergeant of the post came out to meet us, a short gray man with a pipe.
He looked at Corvin. He looked at me.
He didn't ask why we'd come.
