Chapter 37: Davy

I pulled the gray mare up in the middle of the road.

Corvin pulled up beside me.

Davy rode on three lengths before he noticed, and then he had to turn his horse around, which made it worse.

He sat there in the road with his ears on fire.

"Forget it," he said. "It was a stupid question."

"It wasn't," I said.

"You've got your own now. Two. I know that. I'm only the stable boy."

Corvin got down off his horse.

He walked over and stood at Davy's stirrup, so that for once he had to look up at him.

"Not on a horse," he said. "Not on a road. You don't get asked a thing like that on a road."

Davy's face fell.

"You get asked properly," Corvin said. "In the yard. In front of everybody. The way you swore to me."

Davy stared at him.

"That's a yes," I said. "He's just slow about it."

Davy didn't say anything for the whole rest of the ride.

He sang instead, the filthy song from the harvest, all the verses, at the top of his lungs.

Nobody stopped him.

We did it on the first day of September, a year to the day after the king's carts would have come.

Agnes said it was a good day for taking things back.

The whole pack came into the yard. The garrison and the village and the old widows on their sticks.
