Chapter 10: Her Captain
We were back in the house by midnight, and at six the next morning a phone rang in the hall that changed everything.
I woke to Rocco's voice on the landing, low and level, saying "Which hospital?"
I was already out of bed.
He stood at the head of the stairs in his shirtsleeves with the phone against his ear and a face I had not seen on him before.
He listened.
"Is he awake?"
He listened again.
"Don't let anyone in who isn't family," he said, and hung up.
"Rocco," I said.
"What happened?"
He turned.
He did not look at my bare feet or my T-shirt.
He looked at my face.
"Your captain," he said.
"Someone found him on the ferry dock at five this morning.
"He was lying by the gangway.
"Both his hands are broken, and his jaw."
The floor tilted.
I put out a hand and found the banister.
"Is he alive?"
"He's alive.
"He's at Rhode Island Hospital."
"I'm going," I said.
"Grace," Rocco said.
"I'm going," I said again.
"You said I couldn't leave without you.
"Then come with me."
He did.
I sat in the back of the car with my fists in my lap.
