Chapter 16: Block Island
Grace's POV
The Block Island boat leaves from Galilee, forty minutes south of the city, and it was not my boat.
I had never been on a ferry as a passenger in my life.
I stood at the rail on the upper deck in my father's old peacoat, which I had found in the closet at the flat, and watched the Point Judith light slide by on the left.
The sea was flat and pewter, the sky low.
It was October, and the late boat held a handful of people, two dogs, and a crate of someone's chickens.
Rocco stood beside me in his overcoat.
He had not shaved.
He kept the width of one person between us, and I watched his hands on the rail.
We hadn't talked about the bed.
We had talked about the call, in the gray dawn, over a pot of the coffee he'd bought, with the chart of the island spread on my table and the green notebook between us.
He had said, "The man in the gray car is a day ahead of us."
I had said, "Then we don't waste a boat."
We had not talked about anything else.
"You've gone quiet," Rocco said, over the engines.
"I'm a deckhand on a ferry," I said.
"I know exactly how loud the water is when someone's stalling."
"I'm not stalling."
"You're deciding what you'll say to him," I said.
"So am I."
The island came up out of the haze, low and green-brown, with the old hotels along the bluff and the white spire of a church.
I had always meant to come.
I had pictured it in July, with a sunburn and a lobster roll.
I had not pictured the housekeeper.
She met us at the rectory gate, a heavy woman in a quilted coat with a ring of keys at her belt, and she looked at Rocco and her face went careful.
"You're the man my cousin called about?" she said.
"I am," Rocco said.
"I'm Rocco Ferrante."
"I know who you are," she said.
"I heard what your family does.
"I'd like to know first what you'll do to him."
