Chapter 17: The Old Man
The old man lived over a shoe repair shop on Dorchester Avenue, up one flight of stairs that smelled of leather and floor wax.
Marek parked the truck at the curb and did not get out.
"Alone," I said.
"I know."
"If I'm not down in an hour, you may come up."
"If you're not down in an hour," he said, "I'll come up through the roof."
He took my hand off the door handle and held it between both of his, and then let me go.
The kitchen at the top of the stairs was small and spotless.
There was an oilcloth on the table and a radio on the windowsill playing low.

The old man sat at the table in his shirtsleeves and his union pin.
He did not get up.
He pointed his cane at the chair across from him and pushed a mug of tea over the oilcloth.
"Sit," he said. "Drink. I'm too old to be polite twice."
I sat.
The tea was black and strong and he had put sugar in it without asking.
"Five seats," said the old man. "Three carry the vote. I'll count them for you out loud, and you will not interrupt me."
"All right."
"Mine is yours. I'm not telling you why."
