I went into the Hibernian Hall that night without covering my face.

I had left the makeup in the drawer.

The scar ran white under my left eye.

In the light of the hall the plate showed as a small hard ridge along the bone.

The little silver eagle was pinned to my collar.

Marek stopped me at the door of the back room and fixed the brooch where it had slipped.

His thumbs brushed my throat, and I felt it all the way down to my boots.

"I'll be behind you," he said.

I walked in.

The back room smelled of cigars and floor wax.

A long table stood in the middle, with five carved chairs along it and a green lamp hanging low.

The old man sat at the head with his cane across his knees.

The bar owners' man sat on his right, and the Neponset yards' man on his left, with his arms folded.

The Kubiak seat stood empty.

I looked at the oldest driver, who was waiting by the wall with his cap in his hands.

"Sit," I said. "There."

He crossed the room and sat in the chair with his scarred hands flat on the wood, and he did not flinch.

Behind him the eleven drivers filed in and stood along the back wall.

Irena came in last, in her church black, and stood with her hands folded under the crucifix.
