Chapter 11: Whose Handwriting
They laid the evidence out on the kitchen counter over breakfast toast.
There was Anqi's place card, front and back, and beside it Mengyao's phone, with a photograph of the seating chart from the Lakeview Hotel.
The small neat pen on the back of the card was the same pen as the names on the chart.
The number nine on one had the same flat top and the same curl as the nine on the other.
"That's Haoran's seven," Mengyao said, tapping the screen. "He crosses it. He's always crossed it, since primary school. My mother used to scold him."
"The card says fourteen, crossed out, then nine."
"So someone first put you at the children's table."
"And Haoran moved me."
"Your brother-in-law," Mengyao said slowly, "put you next to me on purpose."
"He looked at the ceiling lamp for a very long time at dinner."
"He asked who wanted tea."
They stared at each other over the toast.
"Why?" Anqi said.
"I have no idea. He's never meddled in his life. He draws bridges."
Mengyao called her cousin.
It rang six times and went to a message that said he was in a site meeting and would reply tomorrow.
Anqi called her sister.
Anning picked up on the first ring, said "Hello! I'm marking spelling tests, can't talk," and hung up before Anqi finished the word "card."
They looked at the dead phone.
"She's hiding something," Anqi said.
"They're both hiding something."
"Let's ask the one person who can't lie."
"Nainai lies all the time," Mengyao said. "She just does it loudly."
