Chapter 19: The Bond Is a Lid
Kari slid a plate of eggs in front of me at six the next morning and looked me up and down.
"Rule two says he sleeps in the barracks," she said.
"He does."
"And you slept in the barracks."
"I was checking on his ribs."
"Uh huh." She poured my coffee. "Is that what they're calling it?"
"Kari."
"I'm only saying it takes a very thorough nurse to walk home at dawn with your sweater on inside out."
I looked down.
It was on inside out.
Osric came in through the kitchen door before I could think of a defense, and he did not look like a man who wanted to joke.
He took the chair across from me and laid his stick on the table.
"I need to ask you something," he said. "And I need you to be honest, because it matters more than your pride."
"Ask."
"Has Lucan told you about his wolf?"
I put my fork down.
"Last night."
"Then he's told you a part." Osric rubbed his eyes. "I've been going through the old books since the ring. I found it at four in the morning, in a hand older than the pack house."
Kari sat down without being asked.
"A Moon wolf doesn't mate by chance," he said. "Every other wolf is matched by the moon, and they take what they're given."
"I did."
"You did. But the old books call a Moon wolf's match a lid."
"The bond was a lid," I said. "You said that at the border."
"I said it. I didn't know the rest." He took a breath. "The lid does two things. It keeps the Moon wolf asleep, so she can't be taken or used. And it pours some of her strength into the mate she's tied to."
