Chapter 7: What Matteo Knew

Matteo's POV

I had been in that corridor for four hours when the doctor came out.

She was the gray-braided one, and she didn't waste my time.

"Her count is dangerously low, and she's stable for now," she said. "She'll stay at least ten days."

"Can she be moved after that?"

"Mr. Ravello, she needs more than chemotherapy." The doctor kept her voice level. "Her best chance is a stem-cell transplant, and that needs a donor."

"Take my blood," I said.

"You're not related to her. A parent or a full sibling is where we start. Does she have any?"

I looked through the glass at the bed.

She was small under the sheet, with a tube in her arm and her hair across the pillow.

"She's been told she doesn't," I said.

The doctor wrote something down and went away.

I sat down on the plastic chair and put my elbows on my knees.

I was thirty-four years old. I had never in my life felt that I didn't know what to do with my hands.

I knew what to do about men who crossed me.

Nine years ago I found my father on the kitchen floor with a coffee cup still in his hand.

Salvatore Moretti had sent the men.

Three winters ago a dying accountant gave me a ledger and a lab sheet, and I wrote the peace terms that night.
