Chapter 22: Washer

Darius had called the training center on Monday morning and said yes before I could finish my coffee.

By Saturday afternoon he was still grinning about it, in odd moments, at the sink and at stoplights, and I kept catching him at it.

I was folding towels in the laundry closet off the garage when he came in with an armful of moving blankets.

"Those are the company's," I said.

"Tavon says wash them or he'll tell the boss it was me."

"He said that," I said.

"He said it with a lot of feeling."

I took the blankets and crammed them into the washer.

They were heavy and thick, and I set the machine to the longest cycle and slammed the lid.

The washer lurched awake.

It shuddered and began to thump on its pad, and the whole washer and dryer stack shook against the wall.

A deep rolling vibration came up through my palms.

I stood there with my hands flat on the lid.

"Amber," Darius said. "What are you doing?"

"I'm feeling it."

"You're what?"

"It's very strong." I looked at him over my shoulder. "I think it's the heavy load."
