Chapter 20: Harper at the Door
"Everything is a lot of boxes," I said.
"Then bring a cart." The board chair let the door swing shut. "And the coffee man. I want to hear him say it."
She went inside.
I watched her cross the lobby.
Harper stood up behind the front desk to meet her.
The chair walked past her.
I spent Monday afternoon at Vivian's office building the binder.
Tab one was the payroll.
Tab two was the Cayman account, six years of deposits on the third of every month.
Tab three was the Delaware certificate with Blake's looping B.
Tab four was the override log the young engineer described, and the name on the account.
Vivian read each tab as I finished it and said, "Fine," which from her was a medal.
I picked Rosie up from the twins' mom at five.
"Did they cry?" she asked.
"A whole lobby clapped."
"Not the same. Next time, crying."
That night Rosie went down at seven-thirty without a fight for the first time in her life.
I stood over her crib for a full minute, suspicious.
Then I went downstairs and opened the binder on the kitchen table.
Blake had moved out of the guest house the day after the hearing.
