Chapter 23: Audit Committee
"He wants me gagged," Cliff said. "In a courtroom in San Jose. At the exact minute I'm supposed to be talking in his building."
"He wants you in two places," I said. "So you're in neither."
I already had Vivian on the phone.
She listened to the whole thing without a single almond.
"Fine," she said. "I'll take the judge. You take the room."
"You hate driving to San Jose."
"I hate losing more. Tell the coffee man to wear a jacket. A real one."
On Thursday at seven-thirty my neighbor came across the street in her cardigan with a canvas bag of knitting.
"I'm told I'm on duty," she said, and held out her arms for Rosie.
"She's teething. She'll bite."
"So did my husband." She settled Rosie on her hip. "Go. And this time I want a full report. I never get to say anything."
Cliff was waiting outside Kestrel at eight-forty.
He was wearing a navy jacket that was too tight across the back.
"My brother-in-law's," he said. "Don't look at it."
"I'm not looking at it."
"You're looking at it very hard."
"It's a good jacket," I said, and he laughed, and some of the gray went out of his face.
The three engineers met us in the lobby.
The payables lead had her backpack with the conference stickers.
The older one with the ponytail had put on a tie.
The young engineer was carrying the succulent in its mug.
"For luck," he said.
The big conference room was on the top floor.
It had a long white table and a wall of windows over the hills.
