Chapter 27: Terms
"No," I said.
Vivian didn't look surprised.
"No to seeing him, or no to alone?"
"No to alone." I closed my laptop. "I'll see him. With you. Somewhere with witnesses."
"His mother's house has a lot of witnesses," Vivian said. "Mostly ceramic."
On Wednesday afternoon the young mom took Rosie, an hour late and full of apologies.
Vivian drove us up into the hills above Woodside.
The house was long and low at the end of a gravel drive, with oak trees and a tennis court nobody used.
I had spent five Thanksgivings there.
I had never once been allowed to help in the kitchen.
Blake's mother opened the door herself.
She was seventy, thin as a rail, in a white blouse and pearls.
She looked at me, then at Vivian, then back at me.
"Margot," she said.
"Hello."
She didn't step aside right away.
"I didn't know about the passport," she said quietly. "I want you to hear that from me. I bought the crib he asked for. I didn't know what it was for."
I believed her.
I didn't say so.
"Thank you," I said.
She led us into the sunroom.
Blake was sitting in a wicker chair by the windows.
He was in sweatpants and an old college T-shirt.
A black plastic box was strapped around his left ankle.
