Chapter 28: The Job
I looked at Vivian.
She kept her eyes on the road and her face perfectly blank.
It was the blankest I'd ever seen it.
"Can I answer you in person?" I said into the phone. "Tomorrow?"
"Ten o'clock. Top floor." The board chair hung up.
Vivian drove for a full minute without speaking.
"It's a very good job," she said finally.
"I know."
"It's a public company. Stock. A corner office. Real health insurance, not my insurance, which mostly covers almonds."
"I know, Vivian."
"I'd take it." She changed lanes. "I'd hate you a little. But I'd take it."
I watched the oaks go by.
"I'll tell you tomorrow," I said.
"You'll tell them tomorrow," she said. "You've already told me. I can see it from here."
The next morning the boardroom at Kestrel had fresh flowers on the table.
Someone had taken Blake's photo off the wall.
There was a pale rectangle where it had been.
The board chair sat at the head with the old director and the woman with the laptop.
There was a folder in front of my chair with an offer letter in it.
I didn't open it.
"Thank you," I said. "I mean that. And no."
The old director's eyebrows went up.
The chair didn't move at all.
"Tell me why," she said. "I'll want to tell the others."
"Because I spent five years in a kitchen thinking I'd thrown my career away," I said. "And then a woman ate almonds at me until I remembered I hadn't. There are a lot of women in a lot of kitchens on this peninsula. Lawyers. Engineers. Doctors. Somebody told them their babies deserved mothers who weren't billing machines."
