I walked out to the end of the dock and stood beside him.
I did not touch him.
His knuckles were white on the railing, and his breath came in short, hard pulls.
"Five years ago," he said. "She said she should have told me five years ago."
"I know."
"Posy is five."
"I know, Valen."
"Two years I stood in that flower bed," he said. "I thought I was losing my mind."
He laughed, and the sound scared me.
"Does he know?" he asked. "Conrad. Did he know?"
"The letter says he asked her to marry him because of it."
Valen went very still.
Then he turned around and looked up the long lawn toward the lit windows of the main house.
"Don't," I said.
"Stay here."
"Valen."
"Please, Carys. Stay here."
