On the morning Posy turned six, there was snow on the lake and flour on the kitchen ceiling.
Conrad was at the stove in an apron, scowling at a pan.
"It is supposed to bubble," he said.
"Flip it when it bubbles."
"It is not bubbling."
"Then it isn't time."
He glared at the pancake as if it had insulted him.
Behind him, Jasper sat on the counter eating batter out of the bowl.
Their mother was teaching my mother a card game at the table.
My mother had driven down from Scranton the night before in her old Buick.
She had said nothing when she saw the house, and then she had cried quietly in the hall.
She did not owe a cent to her hospice anymore.
Conrad had settled it in October and refused to let me thank him.
He had made pancakes every Sunday since, badly, and nobody had complained.
