Chapter 19: The Sill

On Saturday morning I raised every blind in the house myself, before my first cup of coffee.

I went through the dining room, the kitchen, the guest room and the bathroom with my bathrobe flapping.

I jerked each cord until the light came pouring in.

Tyler followed me from room to room with his hair standing up, carrying two mugs.

"You're loud about it," he said.

"I'm making a statement."

"To who?"

"To the dust," I said.

He laughed so hard that he spilled coffee on the hall runner, and I put my arms around him and licked it off his wrist.

We spent the day the way ordinary people spend a Saturday, with groceries and laundry.

He fixed my dripping bathroom faucet and I returned his mother's tray.

By late afternoon the sun slanted low and gold down the length of Sandpiper Court.

The street was full of Saturday.

A man was washing a truck with a green hose, and two boys on bikes were arguing about a ramp.

The retired teacher was walking his rounds with his hands behind his back.

I stood at the big corner window in the master, the tall one over the porch roof that looks straight down the cul-de-sac.

It was bare to the glass.

I had pushed the sash all the way up, and the warm air came in smelling of cut grass and charcoal.

The ceiling light was on, and the lamp, and I stood in the open frame in my slip, with the whole court below me.
