Chapter 4: The Bow

The shrimper let go of the bride so fast she nearly sat down.

Margot walked the ring light straight across my floor in four-inch heels.

I could hear every one of them on the wood.

"Look at this place," she told the phone. "Mirrors from the seventies. A piano with a broken key. I love it. It's so vintage."

Gussie put down her coffee.

"I'm about to be on the internet for a reason," she said.

I touched her arm.

"Margot," I said, warm as I could make it. "What a nice surprise. Can I get you some water?"

Margot swung the camera onto me.

"Y'all, this is Posey. She runs the old school. She's sweet. She's just a little behind." She smiled into the lens. "That's why Merrill Manners exists. Modern etiquette for modern women. Link in bio."

The comments were scrolling up the side of her phone too fast to read.

I caught one.

Margot caught it too.

Her smile got tighter.

Emmett stepped forward.

"Margot. Turn it off."

"Hi, big brother! Y'all, my brother's learning to dance. Isn't that the cutest thing?" She aimed the phone at his shoes. "Bless him."

He didn't move.

She kept talking to the phone.

"So my big news. The Order of the Silver Crescent is choosing its court trainer this month. And between us, girls, it's time for fresh blood. No more dusty old curtsies."

There it was.

The Silver Crescent court has bowed the Blanchard way for fifty years.

My grandmother taught the first court.

I taught the last six.

"That's so exciting," I said. "Would you show your viewers the bow?"

Margot paused.

"The what?"

"The court bow. The one the queen does at the ball. Since you'll be teaching it." I gestured at the long mirror. "We have the best floor in Mobile for it. Please. I'd love to learn something modern."
